Other Processors in PC's

This page describes the various coprocessors in a PC including DSP, the math coprocessor, also describes RISC and CISC technology then a short overview of popular microprocessors that have been used in microcomputers, such as the 6502, 6800 and Z80.

CoProcessors In A Personal Computer

The word coprocessor encompasses many of the components in a PC, broadly speaking the PC has several coprocessors in a standard system. The keyboard and mouse controller device is a coprocessor that performs functions such as scanning the key presses and mouse movements. Coprocessors relieve the computer's microprocessor of specific processing tasks. A math coprocessor handles numeric processing and a graphics coprocessor handles video rendering. 486 DX, DX2, DX4, and Pentium processors include a built-in math coprocessor.
